Alternative business financing: your real choices
Alternative business financing explained: working capital, lines of credit, term loans, equipment, invoice and expansion financing, and when each fits.
Alternative business financing is any funding that comes from outside a traditional bank: working capital, a business line of credit, term loans, equipment financing, invoice financing and expansion financing. Each one is built for a different job. The right choice depends on what the money is for, how fast you need it, and how your revenue comes in.
Why owners look beyond the bank
Banks do good work, but their process is built for a certain kind of borrower and a certain pace. Bank loans often take weeks, ask for years of tax returns and financial statements, and lean heavily on collateral and the owner’s personal credit. If you have a payroll gap on Friday or a supplier offering a discount that expires this week, that timeline does not match the problem.
Alternative financing looks at the business itself. Your recent bank deposits, how long you have been operating and how steady your revenue is carry real weight. Paperwork is lighter and decisions come fast. At Royal Funding Group, approvals come in hours and funding lands the same day.
The six main options
Here is what each product does and the situation it fits best.
Working capital
Working capital is a lump sum for short-term needs: payroll, inventory, seasonal gaps, repairs, marketing or a tax bill. Terms run 5 to 12 months. It fits a specific need with a clear payback window, like stocking up before your busy season and repaying as those sales come in.
Business line of credit
A business line of credit gives you a limit you draw from when you need it. Draw $1,000 or more, repay, and draw again. You pay only on what you use, and there is no cost to open it and no annual fee. It fits owners whose cash needs come and go: uneven months, surprise repairs, or a cushion you want in place before you need it.
Term loans
Term loans are larger amounts repaid over 12 to 48 months. They fit bigger projects that pay back over time: a renovation, a large equipment purchase, hiring a team, refinancing existing debt or a major inventory buy.
Equipment financing
Equipment financing pays for machinery, vehicles or tools, and the equipment itself usually anchors the deal. It fits when the thing you need is a physical asset that will earn its keep for years. A specialist sets the exact structure based on the equipment and your business.
Invoice financing
Invoice financing is for businesses whose customers pay on net 30, net 60 or net 90 terms. Instead of waiting for those invoices to clear, you get cash now against the money you are already owed. It fits contractors, wholesalers, staffing firms and trucking companies that do the work today and get paid next quarter.
Expansion financing
Expansion financing covers growth moves: a new location, an acquisition, another franchise unit, more trucks in the fleet, or a large contract that needs cash up front. Amounts go up to $5M.
How to pick the right one
Start with the purpose of the money, then match the product to it. A few quick rules of thumb:
- One-time, short-term need: working capital.
- Ongoing, unpredictable needs: a line of credit.
- Big project with a long payback: a term loan.
- A specific machine or vehicle: equipment financing.
- Customers who pay slowly: invoice financing.
- Opening, buying or scaling: expansion financing.
Then look at the full cost. Every offer has a total payback amount: what you borrow plus everything you pay to use it. Compare offers on that number and on the payment schedule, not on one headline figure. Ask about any fees, and ask whether there is an early payoff discount. Most of our programs have one. The funding calculator helps you see how payments fit your monthly revenue.
What you need to qualify
The basics are simple. Your business needs 12 or more months of operating history and must be based in the U.S. This is business financing only, not personal loans, and startups and pre-revenue businesses are not funded at this time.
Credit matters, but it is not the whole picture. We work across a wide range of credit scores and look at the whole business. Under 550, options are limited. Between 550 and 650 is a good fit for most programs. Above 650 gets the best pricing and the highest limits. Unsecured programs go up to $5M with no collateral required.
If you already know which product fits, you can apply in two minutes and have a specialist on the phone the same day.
One application, several options
You do not have to guess which product is right or shop each one separately. Royal Funding Group arranges financing through a network of funding partners, so one application gives you access to multiple options. Your specialist lays them side by side and helps you compare total payback, term length and payment schedule.
The application takes two minutes: amount, average monthly revenue, time in business, mobile phone and email. No documents are needed to start. Your specialist then asks for recent business bank statements through a secure link. We have been doing this since 2012, with $6B+ in capital deployed to more than 25,000 businesses.
