Questions to ask before you accept a funding offer

Before you accept a business funding offer, ask these questions about total payback, fees, payments and early payoff so you know what you are signing.

Before you accept a business funding offer, ask what you will pay back in total, how and how often you will pay, what fees apply, and what happens if you pay early. Those answers tell you what the money really costs and whether the payments fit your cash flow. A good funding company answers every one of them plainly before you sign.

Why the questions matter more than the speed

Funding moves fast now. At Royal Funding Group, approvals come in hours and funding goes out the same day. That speed is a real advantage when payroll is due or a supplier deal will not wait. It also means you need to know what to ask, because the decision window is short. Ten minutes of questions protects you for the whole term.

The questions to ask

Question 1: What is the total amount I will pay back?

This is the single most useful number in any offer. It shows the full cost in dollars, not just a payment amount. Two offers with similar payments can have very different totals. Ask for the total payback on every offer and compare them side by side.

Question 2: What fees are included, and when are they charged?

Ask for a list of every fee: anything taken out at funding, anything charged during the term, and anything charged at the end. Ask whether fees come out of the amount you receive, so you know how much will actually land in your account.

Question 3: How much will I receive?

Related to fees, but worth asking on its own. Confirm the exact amount deposited into your account.

Question 4: How often do I pay, and how much each time?

Payments can be scheduled in different ways depending on the program. Ask for the payment amount and the schedule, then check it against your cash flow. A payment that fits your busy months also needs to fit your slow ones.

Question 5: How long is the term?

Shorter terms mean you are done sooner. Longer terms spread the payments out. At RFG, working capital runs 5 to 12 months and term loans run 12 to 48 months. Match the term to what the money is doing. A seasonal inventory buy fits a short term. A renovation that pays off over years fits a longer one.

Question 6: What happens if I pay early?

Ask whether paying off early saves you money and how that discount works. Most of our programs offer early payoff discounts, so if cash flow improves, paying ahead rewards you.

Question 7: Is the funding secured?

Ask whether any collateral is required and what it would be. RFG offers up to $5 million unsecured, with no collateral required on unsecured programs. If an offer from anyone does involve collateral, know exactly what is at stake.

Question 8: What happens if I have a slow month?

Ask what to do if a payment will be hard to make, and who to call. You want a real person who picks up the phone.

Question 9: Can I get more later?

If you think you will need more down the road, ask how that works. A business line of credit is often the better fit for ongoing needs, since you draw only what you need and pay only on what you use.

Question 10: Who am I actually dealing with?

Ask where the company is located, how long it has been operating and how it handles your information. RFG was founded in 2012, has headquarters at 180 Maiden Lane in New York and an office in Miami, shares your details only with the funding partners reviewing your deal and never sells your data.

A quick comparison checklist

When you have more than one offer, line them up on:

  • Total payback
  • Amount you receive after fees
  • Payment amount and schedule
  • Term length
  • Early payoff discount
  • Collateral, if any

The funding calculator helps you see how different amounts and terms look. Our guide to comparing financing options goes deeper on choosing between programs.

How RFG handles this

One application with RFG gives you access to multiple options through our network of funding partners. Your specialist does not just send you an offer and wait. They lay the options side by side and walk you through the total payback, the fees, the payment schedule and the term on each one, then answer every question on this list before you sign. If something is unclear, ask again. A good specialist would rather explain twice than have you surprised later.

If you are weighing an offer right now and want a second set of options, you can apply in two minutes and compare.
