Refinancing business debt into one payment
Refinancing or consolidating business debt into one payment: when it helps, how a term loan does it, and what to compare before you switch.
Refinancing or consolidating business debt means replacing several balances with one new loan and one payment. A term loan with 12 to 48 months to repay is the usual tool for it, and Royal Funding Group offers term loans for refinancing. Consolidation helps most when the new payment is easier to carry and the total you pay back makes sense against what you owe today.
Debt piles up in a growing business. An equipment payment here, a short-term loan from a busy season there, a balance on a business card, maybe a supplier you’re paying off over time. Each one made sense when you took it. Together, they can mean a different payment coming out almost every day and very little room to breathe.
Signs it’s time to look at consolidation
Consolidating is worth a look when:
- You have three or more separate business debt payments.
- Your payments come out on different days and frequencies, and tracking them takes real time.
- Most of your short-term balances were taken during a tough stretch that’s now behind you.
- Your monthly cash flow is tight because of payments, not because of weak sales.
- Your revenue or credit has improved since you took on the original debt.
That last point matters. If your business is stronger now than when you took the original funding, you may qualify for a longer term or better pricing than before.
How a refinancing term loan works
The basic steps:
- List every balance. For each one, note the remaining payoff amount, the payment, how often it comes out, and whether there’s an early payoff discount or prepayment penalty.
- Size the new loan. The new term loan covers the payoff amounts you want to clear.
- Pay off the old balances. The new funds go to clear the existing debts.
- Make one payment. You now have a single payment over a 12 to 48-month term.
Because the new term is usually longer than the short balances it replaces, the single payment is often lower than all the old payments combined. That’s the main benefit: more room in your monthly cash flow.
The honest trade-off
A longer term means you carry the debt for more time. Lower payments help cash flow today, but you should still look at the total payback on the new loan compared with what you’d pay by finishing the old balances on schedule.
Consolidation is a strong move when:
- The breathing room lets you keep operating, hiring or buying inventory instead of just making payments.
- Some of your old balances have early payoff discounts, so clearing them now reduces what you owe on them.
- Your business qualifies for better terms than it did when you took the original debt.
It’s a weaker move when the old balances are almost paid off anyway, or when the underlying problem is falling revenue that a new payment won’t fix. Your specialist will tell you straight if consolidation doesn’t help.
A hypothetical example
Say a construction company has three short-term balances from last winter and an equipment payment. Each payment comes out on a different schedule, and the combined amount leaves the account thin every week. Now the busy season has picked up and revenue is steady. The owner applies for a term loan large enough to clear the three short-term balances. One payment over a longer term replaces three, and the extra room each month goes toward bidding on bigger jobs.
